Near Merriltown March 19th, 1870
Dear
Nephew William:
Yours
of the 22nds, last inst. received today.
Am glad to know you remember me occasionly. I have a bad cold nowti’s
difficult to talk, am some better of it.
My general health tolerable for my age (92). Asberry and children, 4 in
number are well. John brot me your letter is just from home, all well ??
tolerably so. Your Aunt Mary departed
this life the 29th of October 69 after a long and painful sickness. She was born Jnay 16th 1791. Eliabeth
Harrell’s health is rather feeble. She has one son living who is 15 years old.
They live twelve miles west in this county near John’s have berried three
children. Your great grandfather Fillip
Moore once lived in Washington County Maryland from which migrated to Fayette
County Pencilvania in 1780 and from thence to Ohio. She (his wifes) name was
Nelly Evens. Names of sons viz. - Joseph, phillip, Even John, Danniel,
Amos. Daughters viz – Sarah, Elizabeth,
Rachel, Nelly, Casumare. Your Great
grandfather John Lewis was an Englishman and his wife a Welsh lady. They lived also in Maryland and emigrated to
Kentucky probably, Henry county, theirs sons, - Thomas, Nathan, Levi. Daughters names, - your grandmother Jemima,
Kesiah, Elizabeth , Sarah, Tabitha, by first wife. Second was Mrs. Ketchum.
They had five, the oldest John, the rest I do not remember. Your grandfather Phillip & Uncle John
went to look at the country in 1796 & moved their families to the mouth of
big Scioto, April 1797. Your Pa was 5
years old at that time & I in my 20th year in which I remain ea a citizen
for 37 years. I left Ohio in 34 and
Illinois in Aprile 47 My daughter Mary
Jane Died Sept. 1st of the same year in her 17th year & Thomas died the
following month the 2nd of billious fevor in 27th year of his age. Asberry & Elizabeth narrowly escaped the
same complaint. They all live on farms
& are tillers of the soil. This county is infested with thieves &
robbers more particularly since the late war. nearly all the good horses are
stolen & men are killed for two and halp in some instances. We have had an open dry winter & the
prospects are unfavorable for a good crop year. fruit already killed. I had a letter from my Levi dated last month
which stated that his Cynthia & W.W’s families, were all well except Almira
who had been sorely afflicted with carbuncle on left shoulder near the spine
but was doing well. If you Ma still lives, give her my respects as also all my
friends & old acquaintances, and please write again full information of the
Fugua family, who of them live & who are dead of them &c, &c, what
you are all doing and any other matter that your judgment may dictate to
instruct or interest me.

great grand father Moore died in 1810 in his eighty fourth year. His wife Ellenor Moore died in 1812. They & Sarah were berried back of the
old barn. Your own grandmother Moore
died 1821 about Christmas time, in her sixty third year & grand father
Phillip died Sept. 3rd 1823. Your Uncle
John died in 1840.
